The final goodbye – pictures from Moscow
25.01.2002 – The show is over, Ponomariov is the new world champion. From Moscow we have received new pictures after the end of the FIDE world championship between Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov. For one last look visit our new picture gallery. All games, results and reports are on our special world championship page.

Fritz 7 service pack – is this the future of chess?
24.01.2002 – A brasher company would simply call it Fritz 8, but the laid-back software developers in Hamburg prefer to refer to it at the "Fritz 7 service pack". And it is free of charge. But it certainly isn't free of new features and goodies. Like the UCI interface that provides a large number of new engines. Or the webcam support that allows you to see and talk to your opponent during the game. Oh, yes, and the even stronger Fritz engine. You will find all the details here...

All you ever wanted to know about Ruslan Ponomariov – and then some
24.01.2002 – CNN had a minute on him, and even pronounced his name correctly (pono-'mar-ree-ov). Everyone in the non-chess world is scrambling to find out: who is Ruslan Ponomariov, the youngest world champion in the history of the game. If you want to know everything about the lad – his games, career, successes, pictures – check out the Ruslan Ponomariov Page, produced by Ukraine Chess Online.

Ruslan Ponomariov is the new FIDE World Champion!
23.01.2002 – Game seven of the FIDE world championship game between Ruslan Ponomariov and Vassily Ivanchuk, which was followed by chess fans on the Fritz 7 server, ended in a draw after 22 moves. This gave "Supermario" a decisive lead of 4.5-2.5 points in the eight-game match. He becomes the youngest world champion in chess history. You will find the game and pictures on our world championship site.

Chess and Art in Wijk aan Zee
22.01.2002 – Since medieval times chess has been a popular subject for visual arts. Among the most famous artists to use chess in their works are the likes of Eugene Delacroix, Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse and John Singer Sargent. Chess and art mingle in Wijk aan Zee too, where Bareev and Grischuk are in the lead. You will find the games, results and works of art in the latest report on our Wijk aan Zee page.

Ivanchuk between a rock and a hard place
22.01.2002 – He came, played a few moves and then started posing for the photographers! In game six of the FIDE world championship finals Vassily Ivanchuk was in a great mood. But he soon got into a spot of trouble against Ponomariov's Petroff defence. The younger man in fact showed very deep match strategy by playing a move that left Ivanchuk between a rock and a hard place. Read all about it in our special world championship page.

Have you got all the latest goodies?
22.01.2002 – The new chess year is well under way, our main products are out and people are working with them all over the world. How about you? Have you got your Fritz7, Mega Database, Powerbook, the Openings Encyclopedia, or Shredder 6. Our support guru, Steve Lopez has described some of them in his T-Notes (you will especially want to check his "New CDs" article).

Ivanchuk drops another game in time trouble
22.01.2002 – A truly tragic game for Vassily Ivanchuk, who played bravely and well. He gained a clearly winning position and then blundered in time trouble. Pressing too hard to win anyway the frail-nerved Ukrainian got into deeper trouble and finally was sucked into a mating net. The game has been extensively annotated by GM Rainer Knaak. You will find it here.

It's not brains you need, guys
21.01.2002 – On the surface it appears a contemplative challenge of intellects across a chequered board. Beneath the surface, we are now told, chess is all about testosterone, arousal, paranoia, excitement, danger and domination. That is what psychologist say after studying over 100 players. Read about it in this column of the Independent.

Dutch pair Timman and Van Wely falter
21.01.2002 – Wijk aan Zee is just a sleepy little hamlet eleven months of the year. Then, come early January, the Corus Chess Festival literally invades the village to almost double the population. However, its habit of closing down at 8 pm does put a bit of a dampener on the social side of things. You will find our report on round seven here.

The Timman who has a heart
21.01.2002 – One of the great icons of Dutch chess, Jan "The Man" Timman, recently celebrated his big Hawaii 5-0. Yet, despite his advancing years, Jan looks fitter than ever – and he's still willing to give the younger players a run for their money as he puts his heart and soul into his games at board. Read about Jan and about a fantastic combination from Leko that rocked Grischuk to his foundations in our latest Wijk aan Zee report.

Ach, who can tell them apart?
20.01.2002 – When Garry Kasparov took the title from Anatoly Karpov in 1985 the chess world was electrified. But the rest of the planet had a problem. The names started alike, both had the same letters, with just an "sa" thrown into the second for good measure. Until today people seem to have problems telling which is which. You will find typical mixups here
