Ten reasons to accept the peace plan
24.05.2002 – The signing of the unity plan in Prague on May 6th has led to a great deal of hope and discussion in the chess world. Criticised by some it is staunchly defended by one of the central players: Garry Kasparov. We asked Garry, who split with FIDE nine years ago, about his peace treaty with the world chess federation. He sent us a list ways it would impact the world of chess. More

Who was there and who was right?
23.05.2002 – Mig Greengard's philosophy is simple: If you can't be right at least be funny. His latest article, he admits, doesn't try to be funny, so he can only hope he is right! Mig decribes the events that led up to the Grand Reunification of Prague in graphic detail and discusses their consequences in part two of his latest column.

My life with chess and music
23.05.2002 – "It is not easy to describe in a few sentences careers than span over seventy years," says Mark Taimanov. But nonetheless he tries and gives us a unique insight into a life that took him from movie actor to concert pianist to world-class chess player. Taimanov is an exceptional storyteller, and you can read all about his life (and listen to his music) in this wonderful interview by Joel Lautier.

Yasser Seirawan sets the record straight
18.05.2002 – On May 7 a momentous reunification contract was signed in Prague. "I've been following the post Prague reactions and had a few good chuckles," Yasser Seirawan told us. Part one and all necessary background information is available here.

Super-GM loses 0.5:3.5 against the computer
18.05.2002 – This is seriously depressing. Mikhail Gurevich, Elo 2641 and one of the great chess analysts of our time, finished his four-game match against the computer world champion Junior 7 with just one draw to show for his efforts. In today's final game Misha was tactically outplayed in the endgame. You can replay it on our javascript board.

A psychiatrist matches wits with Fritz
18.05.2002 – When's the last time a "how to" book really solved your problems when it came to love, children or money? Not to mention how to get the better of your PC chess opponent. Psychiatrist Ernest F. Pecci has written a book that makes defeating Fritz seem effortless. Does the book deliver? James DuBois uncovers the truth.

Junior lucky to draw third game
17.05.2002 – Playing very intelligent, subtle anticomputer chess Mikhail Gurevich had the computer world champion Junior 7 on the proverbial ropes. But it aint over until the computer bursts into song, and Junior did nothing of the kind. With annoying little jabs it got the super-GM rattled and of course the error came. Suddenly it was Gurevich who had to fight for a draw. You can replay the game with online chat on our javascript board.

When a Shogi champion turns to chess
17.05.2002 – Michael Jordan tried it with baseball – it, like, didn't work out. But what about a professional Shogi champion switching to chess? Yoshiharu Habu, one of the most gifted players in the history of the ancient Japanese game, has taken a casual interest in chess – and already reached IM strength. He is currently playing in a tournament in Paris, where Joel Lautier interviewed him.

Every Picture Tells a Story
17.05.2002 – If a picture is worth a thousands words, we've got a novel from Prague. Mig stuck his digicam into the darkest regions of the chess world during the Eurotel Trophy and the landmark unification meeting that followed. The image files are big, but if you'll wait 30 seconds for a photo of Pamela Anderson, why not for one of Alexander Grischuk?

Oh dear, what is this leading to?
16.05.2002 – Today Mikhail Gurevich lost his second game against Junior 7, so that he is now trailing 0-2 against his computer opponent. The Super-GM was outplayed fair and square, his French Defence was demolished by the tactical pressure of the computer. You can replay the game with online chat on our javascript board. The third game starts on Friday at 15:00 GMT. Today's = 17:00 Paris/Berlin and will be covered on the Hellas Chess Club web site, Kasparov Chess or on our Playchess server.

Getting the most out of Hiarcs 8
16.05.2002 – The openings book on the Hiarcs8 CD is a general book merged from a giant collection of historic and modern master games. It is great for training and fun. However the games contain many inferior lines which Hiarcs whould never play of its own accord. If you want to optimise the playing strength you should get the special tournament book created by Eric Hallsworth. More
