Kramnik wins fifth Advance Chess in León
23.06.2002 – This was judgement day for Vishy Anand. Trailing by one loss against Vladimir Kramnik, he had two final games to catch up. Of Elephants and Men
22.06.2002 – Who will win the Advanced Chess match in León? "Aahnaand!" said an elephant on the streets of the city. After a long, noisy night, and a somber awakening the world's number two and three have now resumed their computer-assisted battle. A sensation: Kramnik won game one, the second ended in a draw. 21.06.2002 – The president of the French Chess Federation, Jean-Claude Loubatière (right) has proposed an alternative direction to the present leadership of FIDE. "The President [Kirsan Ilyumzhinov] visibly has his mind on other things than Chess," writes Loubatière in the following press release...
 

Let the games begin
21.06.2002 – Brazil beat England, Germany squeezed through against the US, and after that now Anand and Kramnik battled it out to a goalless draw. Their first two games were interesting, but, as one commentator speculated, "perhaps they have too much respect for each other." You will find a full report on day one here.
 

Déjà vu all over again
21.06.2002 – On Thursday, for the fifth time, an Advanced Chess match is scheduled to be held in León, Spain. This time it is Anand vs Kramnik, with both players being assisted by computers during the game. With some difficulties the ChessBase team has arrived in León, and preparations are well under way. Grandmasters
19.06.2002 – On the first days of June there was a special meeting of Grandmasters to discuss issues that impact the lives of professional chess players – mainly subjects that are of concern to the top 100 players in the world. American GM Yasser Seirawan, who attended all the sessions, sent us a detailed report.
 

Chess night in Hamburg
15.06.2002 – It was a spectacular event, pitting the very successful German national team against visitors of the Playchess server. Sixteen had qualified in tournaments, and took on the GMs in six rounds at 7 minutes per side per game. The result was 24:6 for the national team – quite victory, since the entire presidential board of the German Chess Federation had turned up to watch. More
 

Kramnik vs Deep Fritz starts October 2nd 2002
14.06.2002 – Originally scheduled for October 2001 the match between the Classical Chess World Champion Vladimir Kramnik and the the world's top-rated chess programm Deep Fritz had to be postponed due to the events of September 11. The match will now start on October 2nd 2002 in the Gulf state of Bahrain. This was announced by the Einstein Group in London today. You will find full details in this press release.
