Peter Leko wins Candidates to challenge Kramnik
21.07.2002 – In another exciting and dramatic game Peter Leko was able to hold against a ferociously attacking Veselin Topalov to qualify for the Einstein Classical World Chess Championship against Vladimir Kramnik. 21.07.2002 – At a press conference in Dortmund our chess correspondent John Henderson spotted classical chess world champion together with a very charming lady. It was Madame Nahed Ojjeh, one of the great new benefactors of chess. Read all about it in his latest column and about other matters surrounding the Candidates Tournament.

21.07.2002 – After looking like the sure winner, with a 2-0 lead in Dortmund, Peter Leko suffered a setback when a ferociously fighting Veselin Topalov managed to squeeze out a win with the black pieces. Dresden girls vs the rest of the world
20.07.2002 – At the start of the ZMD Open in Dresden the organisers staged a spectacular event. From a beautiful castle a squad of young female players, using the Fritz server, took on players half a globe away. The event drew a lot of attention, not just in Germany but in the countries of the opponents. You will find a report with many pictures here
 

Leko unstoppable in Dortmund
19.07.2002 – Peter Leko is virtually through in the Dortmund Candidates. In a remarkable five-hour game the Hungarian GM won for a second time in succession against Veselin Topalov. Leko in the lead
19.07.2002 – Playing with the white pieces Peter Leko had a star athlete play 1.e4 for him. But after that the young Hungarian GM took over and outplayed Veselin Topalov in the first game of the Dortmund Candidates finals. The Bulgarian fought back bravely and almost salvaged a theoretical draw, but after seven hours and 81 moves he was forced to resign. 18.07.2002 – Born in Tbilisi of Armenian parents, Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian became world champion in 1963 after a titanic two-month struggle against Mikhail Botvinnik. 17.07.2002 – After his last-minute victory on Tuesday Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov unleashed a lovely combination to to win the tiebreak against Russia's Evgeny Bareev. On Thursday Topalov, without any break, starts playing the final of the Dortmund Candidates against Peter Leko. 17.07.2002 – On Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. European time, there will be an interesting Internet event on the Playchess server.
