American attack plans – now in place
27.09.2002 – Don Maddox teaches at the University of Alabama. He is also a strong correspondence player, writer and president of ChessBase USA. After his very successful Reti openings CD Don now follows up with a CD on the King's Indian Attack, a setup and strategy that will serve you well for the rest of your chess career. The CD is now available and going like hot cakes. More.

IM Dr Ricardo Calvo, 1943 – 2002
26.09.2002 – It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Dr Ricardo Calvo, a medical doctor, a multilingual chess historian and a journalist. He was also involved in chess politics, and his activities culminated in his being declared persona non grata in 1987, after he had written a critical article on the world chess federation. We last met Ricardo when he moderated the Advanced Chess match in June this year. You will find pictures and links to his articles here.

No more coffee for grandmasters
26.09.2002 – If you are a tournament player and have a liking for a certain brown beverage, you are in big trouble, mate. Especially if you imbibe more than four cups. Ask GM Joe Gallagher, who was dragged off to a test by Swiss doctors after a tournament in Biel. Or Lindsay Earls, a 16-year-old sophomore who was forced to pee into a cup while teachers waited outside. More

The importance of being elegant
25.09.2002 – "Consider chess: the basic rook and king moves are simple and elegant; but then the rules for castling intrude like extraneous points and lines in a geometry proof. Defining the pawn’s powers requires no fewer than five distinct rules; en passant capture pops up out of nowhere like a rabbit out of a magician’s hat. Peace to all chess-lovers, but chess is not an elegant game." J. Mark Thompson comes to this disappointing conclusion in this thought-provoking article in The Games Journal..

ChessBase Tournament Calendar updated
25.09.2002 – Looking for a place to play? Our tournament calendar has been updated. It brings you events and links from all over Europe as well as other parts of the world. You will always find it here.

Grandmaster Eduard Gufeld has died
24.09.2002 – He was born in the Ukraine on 19 March 1936. In the late 1950s had established himself as one of the strongest players in the world, defeating Tal, Spassky, Smyslov, Korchnoi, Bronstein, and just about ever other strong Soviet player. He was also a prolific author who wrote over 100 chess books. Sam Sloan and others have written fine eulogies to this great chess personality.

Okay, so who is the fastest?
24.09.2002 – Since he gave up short pants Garry Kasparov has dominated every ratings list ever calculated. Now at last there is one where things are not quite so clear. Willy Iclicki, FIDE board member, has produced a rapid ratings list with another name at the top. Would you like to guess which players are on the top of this one?

Beautiful minds at Muscle Beach
24.09.2002 – Santa Monica's fabled Muscle Beach is normally a place for surfers, bladers and sunbathers. But now a new crowd has its turf on the white sands: competitive chess geeks. Surrounded by life-sized chess sculptures players hunker over chessboards, plotting their moves. Former L.A. mayor Richard Riordan once arrived on his bike and lost to a handyman. Oscar winning director Ron Howard (right) brought his son. More.

Questions, questions
23.09.2002 – How will he fare against Deep Junior in the match scheduled for December this year? What is at stake and how will he proceed strategically? Why doesn't the US have exceptional chess talents and why are there so few top women players? These are some of the questions answered by Garry Kasparov in an interview that appeared in the New York Times today. We bring you excerpts here.

New sponsors for chess
22.09.2002 – The good news it that Coca Cola is sponsoring a chess tournament, in a fast food restaurant. Now that is where chess really wants to go! The downside: it is happening in Saipan, about ten thousand miles from anywhere you've ever been. And the tournament is only for local children and youths. We'll let you know when Pepsi and KFC jump in on this side of the planet.

Shredder wins first game against GM Kiriakov
21.09.2002 – Last night the Russian junior champion Petr Kiriakov lost the first of two games against Deep Shredder on the Playchess server. The event is being conducted by Martin Müller ("Smurskie" to the Playchess crowd), who has been playing his dual PIII 2 x 1 GHz computer (Diversimex, 1.5 GB RAM, 500 GB hard disk, Windows XP) against a whole pride of GMs. More
