Making Moves: Erotic Chess
04.12.2002
– Did you know that chess is a highly erotic game? Ask Ann Regentin, who has
written an article on the subject in Clean Sheets magzine. "Chess provides
a perfect arena for a long, slow dance of mutual temptation," she writes.
"In both chess and sex, you use that intuition to break the other down,
bring them to their knees in one way or another, whether it's defeat or ecstasy."

early next year. To a boxing match and a game of chess. Contrary to the
Time
Magazine report we believe that Lewis will win the chess game,
that is.

Is chess a war game?
02.12.2002
– It is hardly astonishing that the game of chess lends itself to military symbolism. In recent weeks the media has been full of war and conflict metaphors taken from the our sedate little game. "It is turning out that Saddam is a better chess player than President George W. Bush," says one report. Another says "The inspectors landed. Now the chess game begins." Here are a few stories that
illustrate the point.

Peter Leko fine – asleep in bed
02.12.2002
– There were urgent, world-wide rumours all night that Peter Leko had been involved in a terrible car accident in Budapest. Even the wire services have been trying to check this out. We called Peter's wife Sophie who told us that as of 8 a.m. this morning Peter was fast asleep in bed, snoring gently. Interesting how the same fatal-car-crash rumour about top players keeps coming up periodically. Fortunately we can simply forget this one.

Fritz 8: It's just like in the movies!
30.11.2002
– The latest incarnation of our flagship program Fritz has some fairly remarkable
new features. Take the photo-realistic 3D board, for example. It is hard to
distinguish it from a video film of a real-life chessboard. Except that the
pieces glide automatically across the swuares, and you can change the material
with a click of the mouse. This is just one of the highlights of Fritz
8, which will start shipping next week.

the name of the program that played against Vladimir Kramnik in Bahrain? Well,
a couple of weeks later the story repeated itself on German television, with
a candidate once again facing the same incredibly difficult (and strangly sleasy) question.
This is how she fared...

Alexei Shirov: FIDE steps back to medieval ages
28.11.2002
– Ten days ago we published thhe details of a new
world championship format, as has been decided by FIDE for the current and
next two cycles. Now Alexei Shirov has criticized the proposal in an open letter
to his GM colleagues. "I think the last time when so many players got direct
seeds from one cycle to another was in 1985 which is nearly the same as medieval
ages." You will find Shirov's letter
here.
