25.12.2002 – You know our game is going mainstream when you read, in the New York Times no less, about two feuding chess shops in the same street in New York's Greenwich Village. The owners have filed lawsuits against each other, engaged in character assassination and unleashed price wars. Read about how chess rivalry becomes a blood sport.

Anatoly Karpov wins X3D Rapid Match
21.12.2002 – The four-game rapid chess match between the two ex world champions in New York ended with a surprise victory for 51-year-old Anatoly Karpov over the world's top-ranked player Garry Kasparov. On the second day Karpov won the first game and drew the the second to take the match. Here's John Fernandez' richly illustrated report from New York.
 

Kasparov vs Deep Junior moved to New York
21.12.2002 – This man vs machine match was originally scheduled for October 1 in Jerusalem, then it was postponed to December 1st, then to January 5th. The venue was moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Today FIDE announced that it would be held in Manhattan, New York, from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2, with two "practice games" before that in Israel. We will keep you informed as more details become known.
 

And the winners are...
20.12.2002 – 'Lucky' Levon Aronian, the Armenian GM who turned 20 on October 6th and won the men's section outright, and Zhao Xue, an 18-year-old Chinese girl, who won it on tiebreak. The 2Ks Go 3D
20.12.2002 – 3D viewing goes back to 1838, which was also when Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov played their first match. Or maybe it just feels that way. On Thursday they sat down to face each other for the 174.5th time on day one of a two-day exhibition rapid match, watched by hundreds live on Playchess.com. Here's Mig Greengard's report on day one.
 

Pure magic in New York City
20.12.2002 – Chess in glorious 3D, Karpov vs Kasparov like in the good ol' days, and magician David Blaine pulling tricks off the chessboard. It was an exciting night with incredibly tense games. Girls will be girls
19.12.2002 World Junior Championships has two more rounds to go. Armenian GM Levon Aronian is half a point in the lead in the male section, while in the girls' group the Indian supertalent Koneru Humpy and the Chinese WGM Zhao Xue share the lead. Both groups are still segregated, but the players are learning to live with it. Only the girls sometimes dare to sneak a peek. Read about it in our exclusive illustrated report.

Karpov vs Kasparov in glorious live 3D
